Gill Westgate

Dr Gill Westgate, Cell Biologist and Biochemist, obtained a PhD in regulation of hair growth and the hair cycle from the University of Utrecht in 1997. Her industry experience was obtained at Unilever Research in the UK, where she led their scalp and hair biology research programme for many years. She established a consultancy business in 2003, combining her experience and knowledge of skin and hair science with the needs of R&D in Industry to help companies’ scope, design and implement projects. In 2009 Dr Westgate joined the University of Bradford as Business Development Manager for the Centre for Skin Sciences, UK, now a major centre of excellence for skin and hair research. Dr Westgate remains fascinated by the biology of hair and lectures on this topic to both students and industry scientists and she continues to publish articles on various aspects of hair biology working in collaboration with scientists in both academia and industry. She served as Secretary and President of the European Hair Research Society 2008-2014 and helped establish the International Federation of Hair Research Societies in 2013.
